Portable installation of client applications

Portable installation option - installing the versiondog client application on an external drive, for example, a USB stick.

If you do not want or are not allowed to install the versiondog client applications on your computer, the portable installation on an external drive is also possible.

The portable installation on an external drive requires a separate license. Please contact our support team.

To install the versiondog client applications on an external drive, you first need a normal installation. Proceed as follows:

  1. Carry out steps 1 to 7 listed under Installation - step by step guide.
For step 7, the following applies:
    • Do NOT select the BackupClient.
If you select this option, you cannot select an external drive as the target for the program files in the next step.
    • The only option you can select for a portable installation is the LibraryManagement.
    • Do NOT select Register file extension for SmartImport for supplier projects.
If you select this option, you can continue with the installation, but the file extension will not be registered. This is because no entries are written in the Windows registry for an installation without client applications on the computer.
  2. In step 8, select a path on the local computer.
  3. Execute the remaining installation steps.
  4. Once the client application has been successfully installed, the dialog Installation successful! will be displayed.
  5. Copy the directory vdogClient onto an external drive.
  6. Carry out the configuration by calling a client application on the external drive.
The client archive is automatically created on your external drive the first time you start the client. The name of the client archive for a portable installation is vdogData.
  7. If you install the client applications on a computer, the name of the client archive is vdClientArchive.
  8. Start the UserClient by running the program VDogClient.exe (the file can be found in the versiondog client applications directory on your external drive).
