First call – important information on server configuration

For server configuration, you may require some information from your system administrator. We recommend that you read this section carefully before starting the configuration, so that you can clarify all questions in advance.

  1. When you open the UserClient for the first time, the dialog section versiondog client login will be displayed
  2. In the Server dialog, you will see either the name or IP address of the versiondog server. Click on the selection field on the right and select Server settings if you want to change the server configuration

  3. Image: Server configuration dialog

  4. Click on Add
  5. Enter a name for this server configuration in the Configuration name field.
Your system administrator can tell you whether to use a specific name. If this is not the case, you can select a configuration name of your choice
  6. In the Server address dialog, you will see either the name or IP address of the versiondog server
  7. Activate the checkbox if you want to use the option Single Sign-On For more information, see the tutorial AdminClient
  8. If necessary, change the Port numbers if the default port numbers in your network are occupied.
Your system administrator can tell you whether this is necessary.
  9. The port for the database server cannot be entered manually. It is preset by versiondog and is only displayed when you test the connection or when you connect to the server for the first time. If necessary, you can change it on the server

  10. Click on Test connection, to test the connection to the server.
  11. All ports of the versiondog server need to have a green checkmark. If a red checkmark is displayed, you have to change the port.

The port for the database server is detected by the versiondog server and displayed.

  12. Click on Save.
  13. Click on Close.
  14. Now the versiondog splash screen will now be displayed with the newly configured server selected.
  15. Enter a valid Username, Password and, if necessary, a Domain.
These settings need to be configured by the user during the installation of the server.
    Username: versiondog
    Passwort: ********
  16. You can display the password when entering it. For more information, see: Make password visible.

  17. Click on Login.
  18. If you are working with a versiondog parallel server system, a dialog box will appear asking you for the name of the parallel server system.
Enter a name in Name of server group and then click OK
Your system administrator can tell you if you need to use a certain name If this is not the case, you can select a parallel server name of your choice.
  19. The server configuration is now complete and the UserClient will open

FAQ:: Why does an attempt to connect to the server fail with the error message: "The authenticity of host xxx cannot be established. "The authenticity of server xxx cannot be established. The server is expected to use an encrypted connection. Please contact support or your system administrator."?

There are two possible causes of this error message:

  • In the server's Csc.ini file, the encryption of the database connection was changed from encrypted to unencrypted after clients had already connected to the server In this case, the VD$A\Configuration\DataBases\KNOWNHOSTS.FDB file must be deleted in the client archives of each of the affected clients. However, we recommend solving the issue centrally (and securely) by activating encryption on the server.

  • Proceed as follows:

    1. Start the AdminClient, click on the Help tab and then select the option INI files.

    2. The dialog Edit INI files will then open.

    3. Open Csc.ini then search for the section [VDogFbServer.exe] or add it if not already present

    4. Activate encryption using the key 4857 with the value Y (Y = encrypted, N = unencrypted)

  • If you have not changed the database connection in the Csc.ini file from encrypted to unencrypted (that is, the connection is set to encrypted), it is possible that the connection between the client and server is compromised. In this case, check the network connection between server and client for indications of an attack, e.g. via DNS or ARP spoofing.

FAQ:: When trying to connect to the server from a client, why does the attempt fail with the error message: "The authenticity of host xxx cannot be established. The fingerprint of the certificate is "00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00". Please contact support your system administrator."?

There are two possibilities:

  • The private key of the server archive has been deleted or changed.
This may be because the server archive was restored from a backup or because the path to a new server archive was already used for another server archive.

  • The connection between client and server may be tampered with.
If the private key of the server archive has not been deleted or changed, this error can also be triggered by SSL connections being checked by a proxy or firewall using man-in-the-middle techniques Or it could be that a man-in-the-middle attack is actually occurring!

Necessary action

Carefully check the network connection between the affected clients and the server, especially for evidence of attack or tampering.

FAQ:: I have installed versiondog , but when I try to start the applications I get the following error: "Failed to get proc address for GetLogicalProcessorInformation KERNEL32.dll". How can I solve this problem?

If you have an older version than versiondog 4.0 installed, upgrade your operating system to Windows XP SP3.

You will not be able to use versiondog 4.0 or newer with Windows XP as this operating system is no longer supported.

FAQ:: Is it possible to automate the login of versiondog (UserClient, AdminClient)?

  1. Open the properties of the desktop shortcut of the UserClient and/or AdminClient by right-clicking on it

  2. Go to the tab Shortcut and add the following parameters in Target:

    /account:<user>

    /domain:<domain>

    /password:<password>

Example

"D:\VD\vd\VDogClient.exe" /at:c "/rd:D:\vdClientArchive /account:IhrUsername /domain:IhreDomäne /password:IhrPasswort"

Important Information

  1. Please be aware that there are security risks related to this practice. Among other things passwords are shown in plain text.

  2. The user must be logged in to the User Management module in the AdminClient.
